Miller FFA has successful fall
by Jay Shepherd
December 04, 2009
Lately the Miller FFA Chapter has been dancing in barns,
educating elementary students, and winning speaking contests like
it’s nobody’s business. The last couple of months have been full of
chapter activities and the 13th of November was a big day started
by Food For America. The FFA officers, along with other chapter
members brought horses, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, sheep,
turkeys, and tractors to the elementary. Each high school student
prepared a presentation to educate elementary students on where
their food and agricultural products come from.
To continue our Friday the 13th adventure, the Miller FFA Chapter
held it’s annual Barnwarming Dance, only this year we added a
junior high barnwarming dance from six to seven-thirty. The junior
high students danced the night away! There were about thirty junior
high students that attended and hopefully most of these students
will join our High School Ag Program in the near future!
Starting at eight began the high school Barnwarming Dance filled
with tug-of-war, a dance contest, and the crowning of our king and
queen. Seniors Austin Jackson and Betsy Epps were voted as the 2009
Barnwarming King and Queen!! Friday, November the 13th was
definitely a crazy day for Miller FFA, but a fun and successful
one.
The Miller FFA Chapter had six students participate in the fall
speaking contest. This event was held at Missouri State University
on October 12th. Halston Kirby participated in the Soil and Water
Conservation Speech Contest. Cass Andrews spoke in the Young
Farmers speaking contest and received third place at districts.
Kelsey Allen participated in the Missouri Farm Bureau Speech
Contest where she also placed third. Tori Jones prepared a speech
for the Sheep Producers Contest where she won 1st place. Tori will
be competing at the state contest on December 6th at Tan-Tara
Resort at Lake of the Ozarks. Samantha Whittaker participated in
the Missouri Institute of Cooperatives speaking contest and also
won 1st place to advance to the state contest in February located
at Lake of the Ozarks. Austin Steele, Miller FFA Chapter President,
prepared a speech for the Pork Producers contest and won 1st place.
He will advance to the state speaking contest in Columbia,
Missouri. All six speakers did a fabulous job and represented the
Miller FFA Chapter at its finest.
The last couple months, the Miller FFA Chapter has been working
hard and striving to become the #1 chapter in the state. Last year
we were named the #2 chapter out of 317 Missouri chapters! With the
schools and communities continued support, we hope to show the
whole state what Miller students are capable of!!
